1Why Swaddling Helps

Benefits of Swaddling:

  • β€’Mimics womb environment
  • β€’Reduces startle reflex (Moro reflex)
  • β€’Helps baby feel secure and contained
  • β€’Can extend sleep periods
  • β€’Reduces crying in fussy babies
  • β€’Prevents face scratching

The Science:

  • β€’Newborns have strong startle reflex that wakes them
  • β€’Swaddling contains flailing arms
  • β€’Gentle pressure is calming
  • β€’Works best in first 8-12 weeks

Not All Babies Love It:

  • β€’Some babies resist from day one
  • β€’Some like arms out
  • β€’Some prefer loose swaddles
  • β€’That's completely normal - don't force it

Best Time to Swaddle:

  • β€’Sleep times (naps and night)
  • β€’During fussy periods
  • β€’NOT during awake/play time
  • β€’NOT during tummy time
  • β€’NOT in car seats or baby wearing

2Step-by-Step: Classic Swaddle Technique

What You Need:

  • β€’Large, thin, stretchy blanket (44" x 44" or larger)
  • β€’Or specialized swaddle wrap
  • β€’Flat, safe surface

Step 1: Diamond Position

  • β€’Lay blanket flat in diamond shape
  • β€’Fold top corner down 6-8 inches
  • β€’Baby's neck rests on folded edge
  • β€’Shoulders just below fold

Step 2: Right Arm

  • β€’Place baby's right arm straight down at side
  • β€’Pull right side of blanket across body
  • β€’Tuck tightly under left side and back
  • β€’Should be snug across arms

Step 3: Bottom Fold

  • β€’Fold bottom corner up over feet
  • β€’Tuck into chest area
  • β€’Make sure feet have room to move
  • β€’Hips should NOT be restricted

Step 4: Left Arm

  • β€’Place left arm down at side
  • β€’Pull left side of blanket across body
  • β€’Wrap around back and tuck
  • β€’Secure snugly

The Key Rules:

  • β€’βœ… Snug across chest and arms
  • β€’βœ… Loose around hips and legs
  • β€’βœ… Baby on BACK only
  • β€’βœ… Nothing covering face
  • β€’βœ… Room temperature comfortable

3️ Critical Safety Rules for Swaddling

ALWAYS Follow These Rules:

1. BACK TO SLEEP ONLY

  • β€’NEVER place swaddled baby on stomach
  • β€’NEVER on side
  • β€’ALWAYS on back for every sleep
  • β€’Swaddled babies cannot push up if face gets covered

2. STOP BEFORE ROLLING

  • β€’Stop swaddling at FIRST sign of rolling
  • β€’Usually 8-12 weeks, sometimes earlier
  • β€’Even if rolling only during awake time
  • β€’Transition immediately

3. LOOSE HIPS

  • β€’Hips and legs must move freely
  • β€’Legs in "frog position" natural
  • β€’Too-tight hip wrapping causes hip dysplasia
  • β€’Room to kick and move legs

4. MONITOR TEMPERATURE

  • β€’Don't overdress under swaddle
  • β€’Swaddle = one layer of clothing
  • β€’Feel neck/back to check temperature
  • β€’No hat indoors
  • β€’Room temp 68-72Β°F ideal

5. SUPERVISED SLEEP

  • β€’Only swaddle for sleep, not playtime
  • β€’Room sharing recommended
  • β€’Never swaddle in car seat (overheating risk)
  • β€’Don't swaddle when babywearing

6. PROPER TIGHTNESS

  • β€’Snug on arms, not chest
  • β€’Should fit two fingers between swaddle and chest
  • β€’Baby should breathe easily
  • β€’Never restrict breathing

Signs of Unsafe Swaddle:

  • β€’βœ— Face covered
  • β€’βœ— Baby struggling to breathe
  • β€’βœ— Blanket coming loose
  • β€’βœ— Overheating (sweating, red face)
  • β€’βœ— Legs straight and tight together

4⏰ When to Stop Swaddling

Immediate Stop Signs:

  • β€’Baby rolling from back to front
  • β€’Baby rolling from front to back
  • β€’Baby attempting to roll (even if unsuccessful)
  • β€’Baby getting out of swaddle during sleep
  • β€’Baby showing distress when swaddled

Typical Timeline:

  • β€’Most babies: 8-12 weeks
  • β€’Early rollers: 6-8 weeks
  • β€’Late rollers: 12-16 weeks
  • β€’Preemies may be later

Why This Matters:

  • β€’Swaddled babies can't push up
  • β€’Rolling face-down is dangerous when arms restrained
  • β€’Once rolling starts, it's time to stop
  • β€’No exceptions to this rule

Transitioning Out:

  • β€’Use transitional swaddles (arms out, body in)
  • β€’Start with naps, then nights
  • β€’One arm out first
  • β€’Then both arms out
  • β€’Then move to sleep sack
  • β€’May take 3-7 days to adjust

5️ Types of Swaddles

Traditional Blanket Swaddles:

  • β€’Pros: Adjustable, breathable, affordable
  • β€’Cons: Can come loose, takes practice
  • β€’Best for: First few weeks, experienced parents
  • β€’Recommended: Muslin, lightweight cotton

Velcro/Zipper Swaddles:

  • β€’Pros: Easy to use, stay secure, foolproof
  • β€’Cons: Less adjustable, more expensive
  • β€’Best for: New parents, middle of night changes
  • β€’Brands: Halo, SwaddleMe, Nested Bean

Arms-Up Swaddles:

  • β€’Pros: Allows hand-to-mouth, still contained
  • β€’Cons: May not prevent startle as well
  • β€’Best for: Babies who resist arms-down
  • β€’Brands: Love to Dream

Transitional Swaddles:

  • β€’Pros: Converts as baby grows
  • β€’Cons: More expensive
  • β€’Best for: Long-term use 0-6 months
  • β€’Features: Removable arm wings

Sleep Sacks (Post-Swaddle):

  • β€’Pros: Safe for rollers, cozy
  • β€’Cons: Not technically swaddles
  • β€’Best for: After swaddling phase
  • β€’Replaces loose blankets safely

What to Look For:

  • β€’Breathable fabric (muslin, cotton)
  • β€’Hip-healthy design (loose bottom)
  • β€’Appropriate TOG rating for season
  • β€’Easy diaper access
  • β€’Machine washable

6Swaddle Troubleshooting

"Baby Breaks Out Constantly":

  • β€’Try different swaddle type (Velcro wraps)
  • β€’Ensure tight enough on arms
  • β€’Use larger blanket
  • β€’Try swaddle under arms instead
  • β€’May need to transition out

"Baby Hates Swaddling":

  • β€’Try arms-up or arms-out swaddle
  • β€’Some babies don't like it - that's OK
  • β€’Try during drowsy time, not wide awake
  • β€’Make sure not too tight on chest
  • β€’Don't force it if baby really resists

"Baby Overheats":

  • β€’Use thinner fabric (single layer muslin)
  • β€’Dress only in diaper or onesie underneath
  • β€’Lower room temperature
  • β€’Check for signs: sweating, red face, rapid breathing

"Swaddle Worked, Now Doesn't":

  • β€’May be ready to transition out
  • β€’Check if attempting to roll
  • β€’Try one arm out
  • β€’May need larger size

"Can't Get Swaddle Tight Enough":

  • β€’Practice on a doll first
  • β€’Watch video tutorials
  • β€’Try Velcro swaddles instead
  • β€’Ask nurse or lactation specialist to show you

"Baby Startles Even When Swaddled":

  • β€’Startle reflex is normal until 4-6 months
  • β€’Swaddle reduces but doesn't eliminate
  • β€’White noise can help
  • β€’Some babies are more "startly"
