1Why Day/Night Confusion Happens
In the Womb:
- No light/dark cues
- Mom's movement rocks baby to sleep during the day
- Baby often most active at night when mom rests
- No established circadian rhythm yet
After Birth:
- Newborns don't produce melatonin yet (starts around 2-3 months)
- Brain's circadian "clock" is immature
- No internal sense of day vs. night
- All sleep is survival-based, not schedule-based
Peak Age:
- Most common in first 2-6 weeks
- Can last up to 8-10 weeks
- Preemies may take longer to adjust
- Completely normal and temporary!
