Months 7-9: sitting solo, crawling, the pincer grasp, and stranger awareness.
Baby Milestones: Months 7-9 (Sitting, Crawling & On the Move)
Months seven to nine are when babies get mobile. Sitting solo, rocking on all fours, that first determined crawl β and a new wariness of unfamiliar faces.
Blink and your baby goes from sitting propped against a cushion to launching across the living room floor. Months seven to nine are the mobility stage: a stronger core, a curious mind, and a body that finally cooperates enough to chase what those eyes have been eyeing for months.
Here is what tends to happen between roughly 7 and 9 months. It is one chapter of the bigger story in our first-year milestones guide.
What's Typical at 7-9 Months
Movement
- Sitting without support β hands free to play, usually well established by around 7-8 months.
- Getting into position to crawl: rocking on hands and knees, then scooting, army-crawling, or classic crawling. Some babies skip crawling entirely β that is normal.
- The pincer grasp begins β picking up small objects between thumb and finger (which also means everything ends up in their mouth).
- Passing a toy from one hand to the other.
Communication
- Babbling gets richer and more repetitive β "bababa," "dadada," "mamama" β though not yet tied to meaning.
- Responding to their own name and to "no" (understanding it is another matter).
- Using sounds and gestures to get your attention.
Social and Emotional
- Stranger anxiety often appears β clinging to you and getting upset around unfamiliar people. It is a sign of healthy attachment, not a setback.
- Separation anxiety may begin, thanks to a new understanding that you still exist when you leave the room (object permanence).
- Playing simple games like peekaboo with real delight.
Safety First: You Have a Mover Now
A crawling, pulling, grabbing baby finds every hazard you missed. Before the crawling really takes off, get down to floor level and baby-proof: secure furniture and TVs to the wall, cover outlets, gate stairs, and move small objects and cords out of reach. Our baby-proofing checklist walks through it room by room.
Simple Ways to Support This Stage
- Create safe space to explore. Floor time in a secured area does more for motor skills than any device.
- Play peekaboo and hide-and-seek with toys. These games build object permanence and are genuinely fun for your baby.
- Name everything and keep talking. Babbling turns into words through months of hearing real language.
- Let stranger anxiety be. Do not force interactions; give your baby time to warm up from the safety of your arms.
When to Check With Your Pediatrician
Bring it up if, by around 9 months, your baby is not sitting with help, is not bearing weight on their legs, makes no babbling sounds, does not respond to their name, or does not seem to recognize familiar people. Every baby is different, and a quick check-in is always reasonable.
What Comes Next
Months 10 to 12 bring pulling up, cruising the furniture, waving, and β for some β a first word or first step. Keep going with baby milestones: months 10β12.
