1When Do Babies Typically Roll Over?
The Timeline:
Rolling Back-to-Side:
- Typical age: 2-4 months
- Often happens accidentally
- First step toward full rolling
- May only go one direction initially
Rolling Back-to-Tummy:
- Typical age: 4-6 months
- Often happens first
- Uses momentum to tip over
- May get "stuck" on tummy and cry
Rolling Tummy-to-Back:
- Typical age: 5-7 months
- Usually comes AFTER back-to-tummy
- Requires more strength
- Completes the rolling cycle
Average Milestone Ages:
- 3 months: 25% of babies rolling back-to-side
- 4 months: 50% of babies rolling back-to-tummy
- 5 months: 75% of babies rolling both directions
- 6 months: 90% of babies rolling both ways
- 7 months: Most babies rolling consistently
Wide Range of Normal:
Some babies roll as early as 2 months, others not until 7 months. Both can be completely normal! Factors affecting timing:
Premature Babies:
Always use adjusted age (due date, not birth). If baby was born 6 weeks early, subtract 6 weeks from their actual age for milestone expectations.
