7-12 Months: Crawling, Standing, and First Words

Your baby is becoming mobile and communicative

Second half of first year brings major mobility milestones. Every baby develops at their own pace - ranges are wide and normal.

17-9 Months Milestones

Motor Skills:

  • β€’Rolls both directions easily
  • β€’Begins to crawl (various styles)
  • β€’Rocks back and forth on hands/knees
  • β€’May pull to stand
  • β€’Transfers objects hand to hand
  • β€’Pincer grasp emerging (thumb and finger)

Communication:

  • β€’Babbling with inflection ("bababa", "dadada")
  • β€’Responds to name
  • β€’Understands "no"
  • β€’May wave bye-bye
  • β€’Points at things
  • β€’Copies sounds

Cognitive:

  • β€’Object permanence (knows hidden things exist)
  • β€’Looks for dropped toys
  • β€’Explores with hands and mouth
  • β€’Bangs toys together
  • β€’Shows preferences for toys/people

Social/Emotional:

  • β€’Stranger anxiety peaks
  • β€’Separation anxiety begins
  • β€’Plays peek-a-boo
  • β€’Enjoys interactive games
  • β€’Shows several emotions clearly

210-12 Months (One Year!)

Motor Skills:

  • β€’Pulls to stand consistently
  • β€’Cruises along furniture
  • β€’May stand alone briefly
  • β€’May take first steps
  • β€’Drinks from cup with help
  • β€’Feeds self finger foods
  • β€’Neat pincer grasp
  • β€’May start using spoon (messily)

Communication:

  • β€’May say first words ("mama", "dada", "uh-oh")
  • β€’1-3 words by 12 months typical
  • β€’Understands simple commands
  • β€’Follows one-step directions
  • β€’Responds to "where's ___?"
  • β€’Waves bye, claps hands
  • β€’Shakes head no

Cognitive:

  • β€’Drops things to watch fall
  • β€’Finds hidden objects
  • β€’Simple problem solving
  • β€’Puts objects in containers
  • β€’Takes objects out of containers
  • β€’Imitates actions

Social/Emotional:

By 9 Months, If Baby:

  • β€’Doesn't bear weight on legs
  • β€’Doesn't babble ("mama", "dada", "baba")
  • β€’Doesn't respond to name
  • β€’Doesn't recognize familiar people
  • β€’Doesn't look where you point
  • β€’Doesn't transfer toys hand to hand

By 12 Months, If Baby:

  • β€’Doesn't crawl (any style) or move somehow
  • β€’Can't stand with support
  • β€’Doesn't search for hidden objects
  • β€’Doesn't say single words
  • β€’Doesn't use gestures (wave, point)
  • β€’Doesn't point at objects
  • β€’Loses skills they once had

Remember:

  • β€’Wide range is normal
  • β€’Preemies adjust for prematurity
  • β€’Some babies skip crawling entirely
  • β€’Walking anytime 9-18 months is typical
  • β€’your healthcare provider tracks overall pattern

Motor Development:

  • β€’Create obstacle courses (pillows, cushions)
  • β€’Push toys to cruise with

Language Development:

  • β€’Sing songs with motions
  • β€’Name objects as you point
