1Signs of Readiness
Physical Signs:
- Stays dry for 2+ hours
- Regular, predictable bowel movements
- Can pull pants up and down
- Shows discomfort with dirty diapers
- Wakes dry from naps
Cognitive Signs:
- Understands simple instructions
- Can communicate needs
- Shows interest in potty/toilet
- Wants to wear underwear
- Imitates bathroom behavior
Emotional Signs:
- Wants to please
- Shows independence
- Not in major transition (new sibling, move)
- Cooperative generally
- Motivated to try
Typical Ages:
- Girls: Often 2-2.5 years
- Boys: Often 2.5-3 years
- Range: 18 months to 4 years ALL NORMAL
- Night training later (3-5 years typical)
NOT Ready If:
- Under 18 months usually
- Major life stress occurring
- Resistant or fearful
- Doesn't show signs above
- Parent not ready (that's OK!)
