1First: Is This a Normal Diaper Rash or Something Else?
Okay, let's figure out what we're dealing with here. After changing approximately 15,000 diapers (yes, I did the math), I've seen it all.
How do I know if it's just a regular diaper rash?
Regular diaper rash looks like someone took a pink or red marker to your baby's bottom. It might be shiny, might have some small bumps, but it's mostly just... red and angry-looking. This is what 80% of diaper rashes are, and they're super treatable at home.
The skin might look like it does when you've been in the bath too long - kind of puffy and irritated. Your baby might cry during diaper changes (because it stings when you wipe), but they're otherwise their normal self.
When should I actually worry?
call your healthcare provider if you see any of these (learned this the hard way with baby #2):
The rash has raised, bright red borders with little red dots around it - that's probably yeast. My daughter got this after antibiotics for an ear infection. It needs antifungal cream, not regular diaper cream. The pharmacist can point you to the right one, or your healthcare provider can prescribe something stronger.
If there are yellow crusty bits or pus-filled bumps, that could be a bacterial infection. My neighbor's son had this and needed prescription antibiotic cream. Don't mess around with this one.
The rash is spreading beyond the diaper area or your baby has a fever. This needs a healthcare provider's eyes on it.
Quick mom hack: Take a photo of the rash when you first notice it. If it gets worse, you'll have a comparison to show the healthcare provider (or to reassure yourself it's getting better).
