1Before You Start: Hand Hygiene

Always Wash Your Hands:

  • β€’Wash for 20 seconds with soap and water
  • β€’Before every bottle preparation
  • β€’After diaper changes
  • β€’After handling raw food
  • β€’After touching pets

Clean Work Surface:

  • β€’Wipe countertop with clean cloth
  • β€’Use clean dish towel or paper towel
  • β€’Dedicated formula prep area helpful

Why This Matters:

  • β€’Babies have weak immune systems
  • β€’Formula not sterile (powder especially)
  • β€’Bacteria can grow quickly in formula
  • β€’Proper hygiene prevents illness

2Cleaning Bottles and Equipment

What You Need to Clean:

  • β€’Bottles
  • β€’Nipples
  • β€’Rings/caps
  • β€’Mixing pitcher (if using)
  • β€’Formula scoop
  • β€’Any other parts that touch formula

Sterilizing (First Use & Occasionally):

  • β€’Boil items 5 minutes before first use
  • β€’Or use bottle sterilizer
  • β€’After first use: daily washing usually sufficient
  • β€’Sterilize weekly or when baby is sick

Daily Washing Methods:

Dishwasher (Easiest):

  • β€’Hot water cycle
  • β€’Sanitize setting if available
  • β€’Top rack for small parts
  • β€’Use dishwasher basket for nipples

Hand Washing:

  • β€’Hot soapy water
  • β€’Bottle brush for inside bottles
  • β€’Small nipple brush for nipples
  • β€’Rinse thoroughly
  • β€’Air dry on clean rack

Important:

  • β€’Don't use same sponge as dishes
  • β€’Replace bottle brushes every few months
  • β€’Check nipples for wear/tears
  • β€’Never reuse bottles without washing

3Water Safety for Formula

Water Options:

Tap Water:

  • β€’Safe in most U.S. cities
  • β€’Check local water reports
  • β€’Run cold tap 2 minutes first
  • β€’Boil if baby under 3 months (cautious approach)
  • β€’Boil if well water or unsafe water

Boiling Water:

  • β€’Bring to rolling boil
  • β€’Boil for 1 minute
  • β€’Let cool to room temp or lukewarm
  • β€’Use within 30 minutes of boiling
  • β€’Don't reboil water

Bottled Water:

  • β€’Safe option if tap water questionable
  • β€’Look for "low fluoride" if using exclusively
  • β€’Distilled or purified both fine
  • β€’Still may want to boil for newborns

Nursery Water:

  • β€’Pre-sterilized water sold for babies
  • β€’Convenient but unnecessary for most
  • β€’More expensive
  • β€’Check if fluoride added

NOT Safe:

  • β€’Softened water (high sodium)
  • β€’Well water (unless tested and approved)
  • β€’Water from hot tap
  • β€’Previously boiled water that's been sitting

4Mixing Powdered Formula Correctly

Read Your Specific Formula Instructions!

Different brands may have slightly different ratios.

Standard Ratio (Most Common):

  • β€’1 unpacked, level scoop per 2 fl oz water
  • β€’For 4 oz bottle: 4 oz water + 2 scoops
  • β€’For 6 oz bottle: 6 oz water + 3 scoops
  • β€’For 8 oz bottle: 8 oz water + 4 scoops

Measuring Correctly:

  • β€’Use ONLY scoop that came with formula
  • β€’Fill scoop loosely (don't pack)
  • β€’Level off with knife or built-in leveler
  • β€’Don't heap or underfill scoop

Mixing Process:

Step 1: Add Water First

  • β€’Always water first, then powder
  • β€’Measure water accurately
  • β€’Room temp or lukewarm is fine

Step 2: Add Powder

  • β€’Add correct number of level scoops
  • β€’Don't add extra "for good measure"
  • β€’Don't add less to stretch formula

Step 3: Mix Thoroughly

  • β€’Cap bottle and shake well
  • β€’Or stir with clean utensil
  • β€’Shake for 10-15 seconds
  • β€’No clumps should remain

Step 4: Check

  • β€’Formula should be smooth
  • β€’No powder at bottom
  • β€’Appropriate color for your formula

Common Mistakes to AVOID:

  • β€’βœ— Adding powder first (wrong concentration)
  • β€’βœ— Packed scoops (too concentrated)
  • β€’βœ— Heaping scoops (too concentrated)
  • β€’βœ— Eyeballing measurements
  • β€’βœ— Using measuring spoons instead of provided scoop
  • β€’βœ— Diluting to save money (dangerous)
  • β€’βœ— Concentrating for more calories (unless healthcare provider says)

5️ Formula Temperature & Testing

What Temperature:

  • β€’Room temperature is fine
  • β€’Body temperature (98-100Β°F) often preferred
  • β€’NOT required to warm
  • β€’Baby may accept cold formula

Safe Warming Methods:

Bottle Warmer:

  • β€’Safest and most consistent
  • β€’Follow device instructions
  • β€’Usually 3-5 minutes
  • β€’Best investment for ease

Warm Water Bath:

  • β€’Place bottle in bowl of warm water
  • β€’5-10 minutes
  • β€’Swirl occasionally
  • β€’Free method

Under Running Warm Water:

  • β€’Hold bottle under warm tap
  • β€’Rotate for even warming
  • β€’2-3 minutes
  • β€’Quick method

NEVER Use:

  • β€’βœ— Microwave (causes hot spots that burn)
  • β€’βœ— Boiling water (too hot)
  • β€’βœ— Stovetop (uneven heating)

Testing Temperature:

  • β€’Shake bottle to distribute heat
  • β€’Drop few drops on inner wrist
  • β€’Should feel lukewarm or neutral
  • β€’Never hot
  • β€’If too hot, run under cold water

6️ Formula Storage Rules

Powder Formula (Unopened):

  • β€’Store in cool, dry place
  • β€’Check expiration date
  • β€’Don't buy formula near expiration
  • β€’Good for 1-2 years usually

Powder Formula (Opened):

  • β€’Use within 1 month of opening
  • β€’Keep in original container
  • β€’Close lid tightly after each use
  • β€’Don't store in fridge (humidity)
  • β€’Write open date on container

Prepared Formula (Unused):

  • β€’Make individual bottles as needed (best)
  • β€’Or prepare batch max 24 hours worth
  • β€’Store in fridge immediately
  • β€’Use within 24 hours
  • β€’Date/time label helpful

Prepared Formula (Baby Started):

  • β€’Use within 1 hour at room temp
  • β€’Bacteria from baby's saliva grows fast
  • β€’Discard after 1 hour
  • β€’Don't save for later
  • β€’Don't refrigerate partial bottles

Ready-to-Feed Formula:

  • β€’Unopened: Store at room temp
  • β€’Opened: Refrigerate immediately
  • β€’Use within 48 hours of opening
  • β€’Cover opened container

Travel/On-the-Go:

  • β€’Pre-measure powder in formula dispenser
  • β€’Carry water bottle separately
  • β€’Mix when ready to feed
  • β€’Or bring pre-made bottles in cooler
  • β€’Ice packs for bottles (under 4 hours)
  • β€’Use ready-to-feed for convenience

7️ Safety Rules: What NOT to Do

NEVER:

βœ— Dilute Formula to Make it Last:

  • β€’Dangerous - baby won't get enough nutrition
  • β€’Can cause serious health problems
  • β€’Can affect development
  • β€’If formula is expensive, ask about programs

βœ— Add Extra Formula to Make "Stronger":

  • β€’Too concentrated strains baby's kidneys
  • β€’Can cause dehydration
  • β€’Dangerous for baby
  • β€’Only add extra if healthcare provider specifically instructs

βœ— Save Leftover Formula:

  • β€’Bacteria from baby's mouth
  • β€’Grows rapidly at room temp
  • β€’Can make baby sick
  • β€’Discard after 1 hour

βœ— Use Formula After Expiration:

  • β€’Nutrients degrade
  • β€’May not be safe
  • β€’Check date before buying

βœ— Add Cereal to Bottle:

  • β€’Unless healthcare provider specifically says to
  • β€’Choking hazard
  • β€’Too many calories
  • β€’Interferes with formula nutrition

βœ— Use Old Formula from Previous Baby:

  • β€’If opened over 1 month ago, discard
  • β€’Nutrients degrade
  • β€’Not worth the risk

βœ— Microwave Formula:

  • β€’Creates dangerous hot spots
  • β€’Can severely burn baby
  • β€’Destroys some nutrients
  • β€’Use other warming methods
