Your 2 Month Old Baby: Complete Guide to Month Two

Your baby is waking up to the world โ€” smiling, tracking faces, and starting to show their personality

Two months brings the first real smiles, longer alert periods, and the beginning of "conversations." It also brings the 2-month vaccines โ€” which are tough but essential.

12 Month Old Baby Overview

Welcome to Month Two! (8โ€“12 weeks old)

Month two is when many parents feel the fog lifting. You're getting small glimpses of the baby your little one will become โ€” and they're starting to actually see YOU.

Big Changes This Month:

  • โ€ขFirst real social smiles (if not yet, coming soon โ€” maybe already here!)
  • โ€ขTracking objects and faces with their eyes
  • โ€ขLonger stretches of alertness
  • โ€ขMore distinct cries (you're starting to know what they mean)
  • โ€ขSlightly more predictable patterns (emphasis on "slightly")

Average Stats at 2 Months:

MeasurementAverage Range
Weight (boys)10โ€“14 lbs
Weight (girls)9โ€“13 lbs
Length21โ€“24 inches
Head circumference14.5โ€“16.5 inches

โš ๏ธ Wide variation is normal. What matters is consistent growth along YOUR baby's curve.

What's the Same as Month 1:

  • โ€ขStill feeding frequently
  • โ€ขStill needs a lot of sleep
  • โ€ขStill needs constant holding/carrying (this is healthy)
  • โ€ขUmbilical stump should be gone by now if it wasn't already

2Developmental Milestones at 2 Months

What the American Academy of Pediatrics expects to see around 2 months:

Social/Communication:

Smiles in response to a smile (social smile โ€” not gas!)
Watches faces intently
Makes brief eye contact
Coos and gurgles when content
Reacts to sounds by quieting or turning toward them

Motor:

Holds head up briefly during tummy time (45ยฐ angle)
Can move head side to side when on back
Hands remain loosely open (less clenched than newborn)
Kicks legs actively

What's COMING (not required yet):

  • โ€ขLaughing (usually 3โ€“4 months)
  • โ€ขFollowing objects 180ยฐ (developing now, full tracking by 3 months)
  • โ€ขBearing weight on legs when held standing

Red Flags โ€” Talk to Your Pediatrician:

โ— No social smile by 8 weeks (some babies hit this at 6โ€“7 weeks; others at 10 weeks)

โ— Doesn't respond to loud sounds

โ— Doesn't follow faces or objects with eyes

โ— Arms and legs seem very stiff or very floppy

โ— Not holding head up at all during tummy time

Milestones are ranges, not deadlines. But if you have concerns, always mention them at your 2-month checkup.

3Feeding at 2 Months

Breastfed Babies:

  • โ€ขStill feeding every 2โ€“3 hours (8โ€“12 times per 24 hours)
  • โ€ขFeeding sessions may be getting shorter as baby becomes more efficient
  • โ€ขGrowth spurts around 6 weeks and 3 months may cause cluster feeding
  • โ€ขWet and dirty diapers are the best indicator of adequate intake

Formula-Fed Babies:

  • โ€ขAround 4โ€“5 oz every 3โ€“4 hours (24โ€“32 oz per day total)
  • โ€ขFeed on demand โ€” these are averages, not exact prescriptions
  • โ€ขBaby will show hunger cues: rooting, hands to mouth, fussiness

Combo Feeding (Both):

  • โ€ขBreast milk and formula can absolutely be combined
  • โ€ขIf milk supply is a concern, work with a lactation consultant

Hunger vs. Other Crying:

At 2 months, babies cry for hunger, tiredness, overstimulation, and "just because."

  • โ€ขHunger cues: rooting, sucking on hands, early fussiness
  • โ€ขNot all crying is hunger โ€” a just-fed baby crying may need a diaper change, burping, or simply to be held

NOT ready for:

  • โ€ขSolids of any kind โ€” not for another 4โ€“6 months
  • โ€ขWater โ€” breastmilk/formula provides all fluids needed
  • โ€ขRice cereal in bottles โ€” not recommended; no evidence it helps sleep, aspiration risk

4Sleep at 2 Months

What's Normal:

  • โ€ข14โ€“17 hours of sleep per 24 hours total
  • โ€ขLongest stretch: often 3โ€“5 hours (some lucky parents get more; many get less)
  • โ€ขStill waking 2โ€“4 times per night for feeding
  • โ€ขUnpredictable naps โ€” 30 minutes to 2 hours, anywhere from 3โ€“5 naps per day

2 Months is NOT the time to sleep train.

Baby's brain and stomach aren't developmentally ready. Night feeding is genuinely necessary. Any "sleeping through" at this age is a lucky accident, not the norm.

What you CAN start now:

Bedtime routine (start early!):

A consistent pre-sleep routine โ€” bath, feeding, swaddle, white noise, sleep โ€” begins to signal "sleep time" even at 2 months. This pays dividends by 3โ€“4 months.

Safe sleep (every sleep, every time):

  • โ€ขBack to sleep, always
  • โ€ขFirm, flat surface (no inclined sleepers โ€” FDA recalled them)
  • โ€ขNothing in the crib: no blankets, pillows, bumpers, positioners
  • โ€ขSame room as parents ideally until 6 months
  • โ€ขRoom temperature 68โ€“72ยฐF

The Witching Hour:

Many 2-month-olds have 1โ€“2 hours of inconsolable evening fussiness (usually 5โ€“9 PM). This is normal, peaks around 6 weeks, and generally improves by 3 months. Survival strategies:

  • โ€ขMovement (rocking, car rides, stroller walks)
  • โ€ขWhite noise
  • โ€ขSwaddling tightly
  • โ€ขTag-team with partner

Wake windows at 2 months: 45โ€“75 minutes max. Baby can't handle longer stretches of awake time yet. Watch for yawning, glazed eyes, and fussiness โ€” put down to sleep before overtired.

5Activities & Play for 2 Month Olds

What Actually Stimulates a 2-Month-Old:

Tummy Time (most important):

  • โ€ขWork up to 30 minutes total per day, spread throughout
  • โ€ขStart with 3โ€“5 minute sessions after a diaper change (not right after eating)
  • โ€ขEye-level toys, your face, or a mirror helps motivate baby
  • โ€ขIf baby hates it, try tummy time on your chest

Face-to-Face Time:

  • โ€ขTalking, singing, and making faces is the ultimate stimulation at this age
  • โ€ขGet 8โ€“12 inches away โ€” that's the range they see best
  • โ€ขCopy their expressions

High-Contrast Visuals:

  • โ€ขBlack and white patterns, simple shapes, bold stripes
  • โ€ขBrain is still developing its ability to process complex color/images

Sensory Experiences:

  • โ€ขDifferent textures to touch (soft, crinkly, smooth)
  • โ€ขGentle music and singing
  • โ€ขBeing carried upright and looking around

Tracking Objects:

  • โ€ขSlowly move a toy 8โ€“12 inches from baby's face side to side
  • โ€ขThey're developing ability to track โ€” this is literally exercising their visual brain

Reading:

  • โ€ขHigh-contrast board books or picture books
  • โ€ขThe words don't matter much yet โ€” hearing language does
  • โ€ขStart a book habit now

What NOT to buy:

  • โ€ขBaby Einstein DVDs or similar โ€” no evidence of benefit at 2 months
  • โ€ขComplex electronic toys โ€” your face and voice are better
  • โ€ขExpensive activity gyms โ€” a blanket on the floor works fine

6The 2-Month Vaccines

What to Expect:

The 2-month appointment usually includes 5 vaccines given in 2โ€“3 injections plus an oral rotavirus vaccine. This is one of the biggest vaccine appointments in your baby's life.

Vaccines typically given at 2 months:

  • โ€ขDTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis/whooping cough)
  • โ€ขIPV (polio)
  • โ€ขHib (Haemophilus influenzae type b)
  • โ€ขPCV13 (pneumococcal disease)
  • โ€ขRV (rotavirus) โ€” oral
  • โ€ขSometimes HepB (if not given at birth)

After Vaccines โ€” What's Normal:

  • โ€ขFussiness for 24โ€“48 hours
  • โ€ขLow fever (under 101ยฐF)
  • โ€ขRedness, swelling at injection sites
  • โ€ขSleepiness

Managing Discomfort:

  • โ€ขInfant acetaminophen (ask pediatrician about dose)
  • โ€ขExtra nursing/feeding and snuggles
  • โ€ขCool damp cloth on injection site
  • โ€ขSkin-to-skin contact

Call the Doctor If:

โ— Fever over 101ยฐF (38.3ยฐC) in the first 24 hours post-vaccine

โ— Inconsolable crying for more than 3 hours

โ— Significant swelling or redness beyond the injection site

โ— Baby seems limp or unusually unresponsive

Vaccines are one of the best things you can do for your baby's health. The discomfort is real but brief. The diseases they prevent are not.
